Sony plans on revealing new footage — and dropping a demo, even! — for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at its PlayStation State of Play later today and it reminds me of my ultimate shame: I’ve never game tape solved the original Final Fantasy VII release!
As revealed on “Salient Points” of old, I’ve started and stopped FFVII countless times over the years. I was that weird kid who only owned a Nintendo 64 and — to no avail — a Sega Saturn.
So…given that I never owned a PlayStation 1, most role-playing games of the era have gone unplayed. Upsetting, I know.

The last time I tried, for the umpteenth time, to make progress in FFVII was just before Final Fantasy 7 Remake dropped in 2020. It was the 2015 PlayStation 4 release of the 2012 PC release which…I played on PlayStation 5.
At the time, I ventured up until Cloud and his merry band of misfits exit Midgar and the game “opens up.” As it turns out, the first 2-3 hours of OG FFVII was enough material for the 30+ hour Final Fantasy 7 Remake experience.
From what we know, there will be Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth — on February 29 — and one more final chapter still to drop. Remake was mostly faithful to the original besides some additions like the multiverse-esque “whispers” that serve as a vehicle to make any and all story changes.

My hype levels for Rebirth, the sequel to WeGotComms’ only unanimous Game of the Year, are through the roof. It’s just a matter of figuring out how far to make it in the original now since my brain is broken and needs it for “context.”
But also to see how faithful the developers stay to Final Fantasy VII and just how far they deviate from the established story.
Personally? I’d like to see them take a sledgehammer to the lore and get the “fans” all riled up and pissed off about how the franchise has been ruined for them.
We’ll soon find out…
